I should like to thank all the members of the HES list who responded to my query about the
form of words used by Adam Smith, both on- and off-list. I
am very grateful. Members answered my initial question fully, and, indeed, the discussion
went beyond what Smith actually said, to the vexed question of what he meant. I hope to
respond briefly to the discussion in the near future.
