The term "formalist revolution" has considerable usage to refer to the  
Walrasian/Samuelsonian based change in methodology that took over US (and  
beyond) econc reasoning in the years after WW2. 
                                                   
There is another sense of formalism (scarcity based obsession with rational  
choice) that made this methodical change possible.
