=================== HES POSTING =====================
William Nicolich <[log in to unmask]> recently contacted me,
asking for my top three nominations for the best books on the history of
economic thought. It was obvious from the request that he was preparing an
article for his student newspaper. I thought the question relevant to the
HES list, and asked him if he would agree to my posting his query. I also
asked if he could clarify what he was looking for. The following is
exerpted from his reply to me. Replies to the list are welcome! I will
forward on anything sent to the list.
William writes:
I want to hear the opinions of current educators, specialists, and
scholars as to which books, articles, and texts deserve their highest
recommendations as representing the best thinking and dialogue on the
subject of the history of economic thought. I am asking for each
participant to extend their recommendations in the form of their top
three choices that fit the criteria. If in the participant's opinion,
their choice of literature represents a highlight in the ongoing dialogue
of the discipline, is a product of brilliant thinking, and is written so
as to be a great example of clarity and accessibility, then the
literature qualifies.
The nature of the study is to not only provide me with an up-to-date
survey of the best books on a favorite subject, but to access the
availible resources and thereby exemplify the type of interaction that
should go on between students and their disciplines so students become
more prepared to offer contibutions to the discipline. A fundamental
precursor to contribution is to be aware of the collection of knowledge
already available in the form of books and sources. I am writing an
article which will include my survey to prompt more interaction especially
within my home department but also throughout the University. As a member
of the senior class, I hope to be of benefit by way of leadership and I
hope to correct my own course of action in preparation for further
education by requesting recommendations on the best books and sources.
