James Alvey's new book, Adam Smith: Optimist or Pessimist? (Ashgate, 2003) 
picks up this issue with regard to Adam Smith. The context for the 
discussion is how Greek and Roman slavery fit his teleological theory of 
history (if, indeed, it is teleological!).
