Other versions of Daddy Long-Legs:
Mary Pickford in a 1919 silent film version of Daddy Long-Legs;
Janet Gaynor the 1931 talkie remake.
1955 Fred Astaire and Leslie Caron in watered-down musical version of the
play, which introduced the Oscar-nominated song "Something's Gotta Give."
In 1915, both Ruth Chatterton and Jean Webster teamed with the State
Charities Aid Society in its effort to place New York's 35,000 orphans into
real homes. In January 1915, Ruth put on a benefit performance of Daddy
Long-Legs for the Charities Aid Society. She was also behind the idea of
marketing "Daddy Long-Leg" dolls to help raise funds. Applicants and
societies interested in dressing the dolls contacted Ruth directly at the
Gaiety Theatre. [i] It wasn't long before there were so many requests for
orphans coming in that a special committee was appointed to handle the
influx of applications. Webster died in 1916.
