The Canadian Conservation Institute, the Library & Archives of Canada, and
the Canadian Heritage Information Network will be hosting Symposium 2003 -
Preservation of Electronic Records: New Knowledge and Decision-making, in
Ottawa from September 15 - 18, 2003. Main activities will be held at the
Library and Archives of Canada, 395 Wellington St., just west of Parliament
Hill.

The purpose of the symposium is to increase awareness of the preservation
issues surrounding records stored on newer media such as videotapes,
audiotapes, computer tapes and discs, CD's, and DVD's. The focus will be on
making decisions and finding practical solutions that can be implemented
immediately.

The program will be based on the chronological decisions that need to be
made as electronic records come into the heritage institution. Papers will
be presented on value criteria, authenticity criteria, factors to be
considered in developing a preservation strategy, preservation strategies
for information content, and media knowledge (deterioration, storage,
longevity, disaster recovery, etc.)

On Sunday September 14, 2003 there will be a special event for the general
public, "Preservation Quest: How to preserve your home movies, CD's, videos,
and more:.

Other activities include two receptions, a banquet and a variety of optional
tours.
