David,

If you haven't done so already, I'd very strongly suggest you contact the
Association for Core Texts and Courses, a group of scholars with exactly
your experiences and concerns in a wide range of disciplines, INCLUDING the
social sciences, not just the humanities. The individuals to contact are
Steve Zelnick or Scott Lee at Temple University in Philadelphia. I've
attended only a couple of the annual conferences, but I've found them much
more stimulating and worthwhile than the usual gatherings of academics,
educators, or economists. It may be a little out of date, but a web address
for further information is

        http://nimbus.temple.edu/~zelnick/actc
