On Sunday, June 19, at 1:00 p.m. (Eastern), ESPN will air a documentary
titled "Classic Wiley," a profile of Ralph Wiley, noted writer and
commentator, who died suddenly in 2004 at 52. The program features comments
from filmmaker Spike Lee and others.
While Ralph Wiley is primarily known as a sportswriter, he also wrote
screenplays, including an adaptation of _Adventures of Huckleberry Finn_ for
Spike Lee. (See article at
http://faculty.citadel.edu/leonard/od99wiley.htm for "In Praise
of 'Spike Lee’s Huckleberry Finn' by Ralph Wiley," by Shelley Fisher
Fishkin; and selected scenes from Wiley's manuscript.)
Wiley also extensively discussed Twain in his 1996 book _Dark Witness: When
Black People Should Be Sacrificed (Again)_.
Since the documentary will appear on ESPN, the focus will probably be on his
career as a sportswriter, but it is likely that his role as social critic
and screenwriter will be discussed as well.
