Dear fellow historians,
On JSTOR the earliest use of this phrase that I can find is Boehm-Bawerk,
Quarterly Journal of Economics, 1896, and it has nothing particularly to do
with workers or labor history. Thereafter for decades (with two exceptions)
it seems a phrase only "economists of transportation" or "location"
theorists use, in the sense of "at the factory door or the station siding."
Does anyone know of economists or sociologists using it in any sense, in
accounting or industrial disputes or otherwise, before 1896?
J. Womack
