NEW NEGOTIATIONS LOWER PRICES OF HIV DRUGS IN 10 COUNTRIES OF THE
AMERICAS

PAHO Director Dr. Mirta Roses has praised 10 Latin American countries
for their successful negotiation to reduce the prices of antiretroviral
drugs for HIV/AIDS treatment. The agreement will allow the countries to
save up to $120 million a year, which amounts to 150,000 annual
treatments. The reduction of prices will benefit Peru, Bolivia,
Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Chile, Argentina, Mexico, Paraguay and
Uruguay. The agreement was negotiated June 5 to 7 in Lima, Peru, by the
the countries' health ministries with support from PAHO, the Andean
Health Organism (ORAS) and the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS
(UNAIDS). Representatives of people living with HIV participated in
negotiations. For the full article, visit:

VIOLENCE IN THE AMERICAS: ALARMING BUT PREVENTABLE

During the PAHO Conference "Alliances for the Prevention of Violence"
participants presented alarming statistics on the impact of violence in
the Americas. In the region, 120,000 people are victims of homicide
each year and 180,000 more die from suicide and traffic accidents. In
countries for which there is available data, 20–60 percent of women have
been victims of intrafamilial violence. Among the fastest growing
sources of violence are youth gangs; in El Salvador and Honduras alone,
some 30,000 youths are gang members. For further information, visit:
