WHO CHANGES LAST REMAINING SARS-RELATED TRAVEL RECOMMENDATION FOR
BEIJING, CHINA

Effective today, the World Health Organization (WHO) is removing its
recommendation that people should postpone all but essential travel to
Beijing, China, the last area in the world to which this advice still
applied. The last new SARS case in Beijing was isolated on May 29, and
since then a number of suspect cases have been considered but ruled out
as SARS. For the press release, visit:

BUTTERFLY 208: CANADIAN YOUTH STIR UP A HURRICANE OF CHANGE

Minister for International Cooperation Susan Whelan has announced the
winners of this year's Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA)
"butterfly 208" contest for Canadian youth. This annual youth takes its
name from the theory that a butterfly flapping its wings in one part of
the world can have a huge impact on the other side of the globe. It also
celebrates the connection shared by youth in all 208 countries around
the world. It is an art and writing contest for Canadian youth between
the ages of 14 and 18. The contest, now in its second year, is designed
to interest youth in international development and engage them in global
issues. For the press release, visit:

CANADA JOINS CARTER CENTER IN FIGHT TO ERADICATE GUINEA WORM DISEASE

Minister for International Cooperation Susan Whelan has announced that
Canada, through the Canadian International Development Agency, will
contribute $3 million over three years to the Carter Center to help
eradicate Guinea worm disease in Africa. Founded by Nobel laureate for
peace and former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn, the
Carter Center is committed to human rights and the alleviation of human
suffering. It is the lead partner in the international campaign to
eradicate guinea worm disease, an ancient disease which today exists in
remote rural areas of 13 countries in Africa. For the full article,

NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM RESULTS IN A PAN-CANADIAN ACTION PLAN ON HEALTHY
LIVING

Federal, provincial and territorial Ministers of Health held a symposium
on healthy living June 16 and 17, 2003, in Toronto. Building on the
extensive consultation process undertaken in recent months, participants
helped develop the pan-Canadian Healthy Living Strategy, a collaborative
initiative by governments to improve the health of all Canadians, reduce
health disparities and relieve the burden on the health care system. The
Healthy Living Symposium provided an opportunity to identify key
priorities, initiatives and actions relating to the Strategy's Phase I
focus on nutrition, physical activity and their relationship to healthy
weights. For more information, visit:

The Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) and their partners
are inviting applications from Canadian researchers for research
projects involving the examination and analysis of the recent public
health and health care system responses to the SARS outbreak in Canada,
