Archives Assistant (1 contract position)
JOB POSTING # LIB0304

DURATION:       September 2003 for 105 working days
HOURS:          7 hours per day
SALARY:         $16.13 per hour (includes vacation pay)

The University of Western Ontario Archives is seeking a qualified
applicant for a contract Archives Assistant to process five fonds from
the J.J Talman Regional Collection and the University Archives. Three of
the fonds relate to the local arts community while the other two
document aspects of the University’s military history. The successful
applicant will physically arrange the contents of each of the five
fonds, carry out basic conservation as required, and prepare appropriate
descriptive finding aids in accordance with the Rules for Archival
Description (RAD).  The contract will last approximately 5 months and is
funded in part by a grant from the Canadian Council of Archives under
the Control of Holdings Programme.

Qualifications and Skills:

Must have a university degree in archival studies or a related field
(eg, history or library and information science) with courses in
archival studies.
Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
Must have experience in the use of Windows 98 and WordPerfect and Word.
Must have excellent organizational skills and be able to work without
constant supervision.
Must have practical experience arranging and describing archival
materials using the Rules for Archival Description (RAD).

Preference will be given to applicants with practical experience in
preventive conservation.

Functions and Duties:

Arrange archival materials in accordance with accepted archival
principles and practices.
Describe archival materials in accordance with the Rules for Archival
Description (RAD).
Prepare manual and automated finding aids.
Perform basic preventive conservation.
