COPYRIGHT DEMYSTIFIED
Toronto: Friday, Sept. 26, 9 am - 4 pm
Ottawa: Wednesday, Sept. 24, 9 am - 4 pm
Instructor: Jean Dryden
$180 Toronto / $260 Ottawa
Amendments to the Canadian Copyright Act included, for the first time,
significant exceptions for libraries, archives, and museums. These
exceptions are complex, and subject to a host of conditions and limitations.
The amendments tried to provide a fair balance between the rights of those
who create works, and the needs of those who use them. However, that balance
is being tested by advances in communication technology and increasing
digitization that make it easy to copy, change, and disseminate others'
works without their permission.
Legislative changes, greater awareness of copyright issues, and the
challenges of the digital environment have changed the copyright landscape.
Heritage institutions, their employees, and their patrons are rightly
concerned about copyright issues.
Using a mix of lecture, examples, discussion, and case studies, this course
takes you through the main provisions of the Canadian Copyright Act and
provides you with the tools to analyze a copyright problem and develop your
institutional policy on this complex matter.
The course includes the following topics:
* An overview of the Act and how it works
* The exceptions available to Libraries, Archives, and Museums, and
their patrons
* A systematic approach to analyzing a copyright problem
* What your institution has to do to comply with the changes in the
Act
* Your responsibilities as a user of others' material
* Copyright in the digital environment
* Government plans for copyright reform
TARGET AUDIENCE
Librarians, archivists and museum curators who are responsible for
administering copyright in their institutions, and researchers who use the
holdings of libraries, archives, and museums in their work.
