As regards to the role guilt played in Clemens's works, one piece of
writing that I have rarely seen quoted or referred to is a 4-page
personal memo Clemens titled "A Cloud-Burst of Calamities" (1906)
which has a haunting final sentence:

"Have you never done a thing that you bitterly hated yourself for?
Did you long for forgiveness? I have "

The final sentence ends without a period at the bottom of the page.
Were there other pages to this manuscript that are now lost? Perhaps.

Robinson doesn't mention this manuscript in his book. But he may
have found support for his theories in this memo wherein it
was not necessary to read between-the-lines.
