Thanks Roger,

      I pulled up the article on Twain's death.  Wow!  You are right
about the typos--and for garbling history?  The article notes that
Twain was a Confederate soldier for a brief period of time, but
relates his war history in a strange way.  After enlisting in the
Confederate forces, according to the New York Times, Twain was
immediately captured by Yankee forces.  He was released on
parole, then broke parole and rejoined the conferate forces.  But he
was captured again and was headed for execution before he got
away and headed for Nevada.
      Quite the exciting story--but perhaps a bit of a stretcher.
