May I also suggest reading “An Interview with Mark Twain” written by Rudyard Kipling in 1890 after his journey from India to Elmira in 1889 to conduct this interview.
It can be found in Dr. Shelley Fisher Fishkin’s The Mark Twain Anthology Great Writers on His Life and Works published by The Library of America in 2010.
My students have thoroughly enjoyed reading it year after year.
