The following is a list of 2004 workshops organized by the Canadian
Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild.  A couple of them are already past but
others scheduled for coming months may  be of interest to those with book
collections or an  interest in book binding and book conservation.

2004 WKSP-001
Wednesday Night Open Studio
Instructor: Don Taylor
Location: CBBAG Bindery
Duration: Six Wednesdays; Jan 14, 21, 28, Feb 4, 11, 18
Hours: 6 pm - 9 pm
Prerequisite: Bookbinding I, or permission of the instructor
Course fee: $175 members/$220 non-members*

This is a project-oriented class. Each student will bring their own work and
receive instruction as required. They will also be able to use the bindery
equipment under supervision.


2004 WKSP-002
Bookbinding II Intensive
Instructor: Dan Mezza
Location: CBBAG Bindery
Duration: Six days; Mon. - Sat., Jan 19 - 24
Hours: 10 am - 6 pm
Prerequisite: Bookbinding I, or permission of the instructor
Course fee: $420 members/$465 non-members*
Materials fee: $30 payable to instructor

This course introduces intermediate techniques, such as rounding and backing
and sewn endbands, necessary for traditional binding structures.
Participants will sew two models, completing one as a German case binding
and the other as either a Bradel or split board binding.


2004 WKSP-003
Limp Velum
Instructor: Betsy Palmer-Eldridge
Location: 24 Castle Frank Cres., Toronto
Duration: Two days; Sat. & Sun., Jan. 31 - Feb. 1
Hours: 10 am - 6 pm
Prerequisite: Bookbinding I, or permission of the instructor
Course Fee: $140 members/$185 non-members*
Material fee: $30 materials fee (plus vellum costs) payable to the
instructor.

This two-day workshop will introduce several variations of the limp velum
structure. Participants will make two models.


2004 WKSP-004
Bookbinding III
Instructor: Don Taylor
Location: Five Sundays; Feb 1, 8, 15, 22, 29
Hours: 10 am - 5 pm
Prerequisite: Bookbinding II
Course fee: $350 members/$395 non-members*
Materials fee: $30 payable to instructor

This course introduces the advanced techniques used for traditional leather
covered, fine binding structures. Participants will make two models, both
with sewn headbands, attached boards, and covered in half leather. The first
model will be sewn on recessed cords with a hollow tube construction; the
second model will be sewn on raised cords with a tight back construction.

Sealed with a Kiss
Instructor: Louise Granahan
Location: CBBAG Bindery
Duration: One day; Sat., Feb. 7
Hours: 10 am - 5 pm
Fee: $70 members/$115 non-members*

In this one-day workshop you will learn to make beautiful greeting cards for
all occasions. Why purchase expensive cards when you can make your own for a
fraction of the price? Bring scraps of decorative paper if you have any. You
can continue to make cards at home easily with no special tools.

Transparency & Translucency
Instructor: Mira Coviensky

Duration: One day; Sat., Feb. 28
Hours: 10 am - 5 pm

Materials fee: $25 payable to the instructor

The paradox of transparent and translucent materials in books is that they
both protect and expose. Both can be used intentionally to layer text and
images, disguise, muddy, dull, shine, convey depth, add mystery and change
meaning. We will examine books and explore the potential of a variety of
transparent and translucent materials, including Japanese and Western
tissues and papers, mylar, rubylith, amberlith, treated acetate, frosted
drafting film, paper velum, and fiberglass mesh. Bring images and/or text
and any drawing/printing materials that you want to explore, and books to
examine.


2004 WKSP-007
Coptic Binding
Instructor: Louise Granahan
Location: CBBAG Bindery
Duration: One day; Sat., Mar. 6
Hours: 10 am - 5 pm
Course fee: $70 members/$115 non-members*
Materials fee: $20 payable to instructor

This one day course will give participants the opportunity to make a very
early book form developed in North Africa in the fourth century. This book
style has exposed sewing with wooden covers.


2004 WKSP-008
Bookbinding I
Instructor: Brian Maloney
Location: CBBAG Bindery
Duration: Five Saturdays; Mar. 13, 20, 27, Apr. 3, 10
Hours: 10 am - 5 pm
Course fee: $350 members/$395 non-members*
Materials fee: $30 payable to instructor

This course introduces the variety of tools, materials, sewing, and
construction fundamental to hand bookbinding. The course will start with the
making of a simple pamphlet and proceed to the binding of two hard cover
books. This class prepares participants to explore bookbinding on their own
or continue with more advanced studies.

Long and Link Stitch Structures
Instructor: Betsy Palmer Eldridge

Duration: Two days; Sat. & Sun., Mar. 20 - 21

This two-day workshop will introduce a variety of long & link stitch
structures. Participants will select two models to make.

Album Structures

Care of Book Collections
Instructor: Betsy Palmer Eldridge
Location: 24 Castle Frank Cres., Toronto
Duration: Three days; Fri. - Sun., Apr. 23 - 25
Hours: 10 am - 6 pm
Course fee: $210 members/$255 non-members*

This three-day workshop is designed for library and museum personnel who are
responsible for book collections but who have little or no knowledge of the
technical aspects of book structures and materials. The emphasis will be on
leather, cloth, and paper bindings from the 19th and 20th centuries. The
course will cover the range of problems most often encountered, and will
discuss a variety of currently accepted solutions. Examples will be provided
by the instructor, however participants are encouraged to bring additional
examples for discussion.

Family Fables

Every family has its share of stories: tall tales or sagas, romances or
fables. And most of us have albums or boxes overflowing with family photos.
This workshop will give participants the opportunity to use several basic
book-making techniques to
create books about their families, using one or more of their own stories.
Bring along family photos or colour photocopies thereof.

Ebru - Watercolour Marbling
Instructor: Shelagh Smith

Duration: Two days; Sat. & Sun., May 1 - 2

This workshop presents the fundamental techniques of marbling and covers the
following topics: a short history of Turkish marbling; materials, tools, and
equipment; patterns and styles; understanding what constitutes good or poor
results. You are encouraged to develop an eye for pattern, colour, and
creative combinations.

Embracing Technology:
The Marriage of Books and CDs

The digital age has arrived and information is increasingly being presented
on CDs. We will look at structures that artists have used that incorporate
CDs and examine the kinds of information and graphics that CDs present best.
We will make models of structures that accommodate CD disks, including
folders, flyers, sewn structures, and a pop-up book/box.

Well-Dressed Books:
Packages, Boxes & Containers
Instructor: Ed Hutchins

In this class you will create imaginative boxes for text and images, and
transform existing containers into personal book vessels. Bring an unusual
container to class and we will explore how it can be used to deliver the
message in a bookish sort of way. The only requirement is an inquiring mind
and a willingness to make boxes by thinking outside the box.

Introduction to Typesetting & Letterpress Printing
Instructor: Margaret Lock
Location: 231 Johnson St., Kingston, Ontario
Duration: Two days; Sat. & Sun., May 15 - 16
Hours: 9:30 am - 4:30 pm
Course fee: $140 members/$185 non-members*
Materials fee: $15 payable to instructor

Participants will learn basic typographic design concepts and how to set
lead type by hand and print on a proof press. Students will design and print
a broadside up to 8" x 14" in size. Participants should bring a 10- to
20-line poem or short piece of prose.

Rough & Tough
Instructor: Louise Granahan

Duration: One day; Sat., May 22
Hours: 10 am - 5 pm
Course fee: $70 members/$115 non-members*
Materials fee: $20 payable to instructor

This one-day course is great for beginners. We will make a rough,
unembellished, leather-bound book consisting of 5 individually sewn sections
in a wrap-around leather cover with leather thongs or corded ties. You will
be able to make this style of book at home with minimal materials.

Boxes & Protective Enclosures

Duration: Three days; Sat. - Mon., May 29 - 31
Hours: 10 am - 6 pm
Prerequisite: Bookbinding I, or permission of the instructor
Course fee: $210 members/$255 non-members*
Materials fee: $30 payable to the instructor.

This three-day workshop will introduce the many methods currently used to
protect book materials. Participants will make several models, such as a
paper slipcase and a double tray, "clamshell' box.


2004 WKSP- 020
Remedial Book Repairs
Instructor: John Burbidge

Duration: Two days; Sat. & Sun., June 12 - 13
Hours: 10 am - 5 pm
Course fee: $140 members/$185 non-members*
Materials fee: $15 payable to instructor

This two-day course, designed with librarians and book collectors of any
sort in mind, introduces the repair of damaged books to make them usable
without destroying their potential to delight as books. Attention will be
paid to different types of binding and the kinds of basic repairs
appropriate for each. Participants may bring books from their own
collections which illustrate different kinds of problems. This may be the
basis for practicing skills.

2004 WKSP-022
Gothic Binding
Instructor: Joe Landry
Location: CBBAG Bindery
Duration: Five days; Mon. - Fri., June 21 - 25
Hours: 10 am - 5 pm
Prerequisite: Bookbinding III, or permission of instructor
Course fee: $410 members/$455 non-members*
Materials fee: $50 including leather ($15 without leather) payable to
instructor

The Gothic style of binding followed the medieval period and retained some
of the good structural aspects of the medieval bindings. Emphasis will be
placed on a well sewn and consolidated textblock, endbands laced onto the
boards as a strong structural component, shaped wooden boards, a naturally
rounded spine, instead of a modern artificially rounded and backed one. The
bindings can be full bound or quarter bound with the oak boards exposed.


2004 WKSP-023
Edge Gilding
Instructor: Joe Landry
Location: CBBAG Bindery
Duration: Two days; Sat. & Sun., June 26 - 27
Hours: 10 am - 5 pm
Prerequisite: Bookbinding II, or permission of instructor
Course fee: $165 member/$210 non-member*
Materials fee: Textblocks and gold leaf will be available for purchase from
the instructor

This is a two-day workshop on edge gilding. Participants will learn to
'rough gild' and 'gild solid'. The materials, tools and equipment will be
discussed along with the varied effects possible, both traditional and
modern. The focus of this workshop will be on edge gilding but other methods
of edge decoration will also be discussed.
