As for me, the use of thick and thin was a direct result of reading Geertz, as I was
introduced to his work initially by Klamer and McCloskey.
 
A short note a decade ago ("Comment: Thicker Is Better", Journal of the History of
Economic Thought, 14, 2, Fall 1992, pp. 271-276) tried to make the Geertzian point.
