While I expect that there are historians of economics who can function only 
in English and math, I sympathize with John Womack's thinking about the 
role of language training in the preparation of historians of economics.  
 
One of the ironies of my own graduate education is the Faculty of Graduate 
Studies' automatic waiver of the second language requirement. The Faculty 
waived that requirement for all economics graduate students, on the basis 
of preparation in mathematics and statistics; hence no one thought to ask 
whether it would be more appropriate for me to meet the language 
requirement. Of course, the second language requirement would have been 
quite appropriate for my dissertation research on Frank Knight.
