It is with much sadness, that I must announce the sudden, and untimely,
passing, on Sunday, after a brief illness, of Don Richan, University
Archivist at Queen's University at Kingston (QUA). Don will be much missed
by the staff of QUA, as will his professional integrity and his commitment
to the preservation of the collective memory of both the University and the
surrounding region. His dedicated work, and expertise, particularly in the
realm of Freedom of Information/Protection of Privacy matters, means that
Queen's University is extremely well placed to meet the challenges facing
the post-secondary sector in Ontario, as it moves to implement both federal
and provincial legislation. We mourn the loss of a gentle man and a
respected colleague.

A joint funeral/memorial service will be held on Tuesday, 2 March 2004,
commencing at 1:30 p.m., at St. James' Anglican Church, Kingston, Ontario.
An Educational Trust Fund has been set up for Don's children. Contributions
by cheque, may be made payable to "Beth Richan in Trust" and sent to James
Reid Funeral Home, 900 Counter Street, Kingston, ON, K7M 7H3.

In closing, our thoughts go out as well to Don's wife and children.

Paul Banfield
Associate University Archivist
