Building upon the comments of Tony Brewer and Steve Medema, a  
potentially very valuable source of information is Elie Halevy, _The  
Growth of Philosophical Radicalism_.  Largely a study in the  
impact of Bentham's ideas, it connects many of the strands of  
classical economics with utilitarianism, thus making a nice  
connection between Smith, Ricardo, and Mill, and ultimately the  
works of Sidgwick, Edgeworth, and Marshall.
