In their book Ekelund and Hebert (1999, p. xi) consider mainly the French
econo-engineering tradition, deliberately neglecting the remarkable German
group of engineer-economists. Wilhelm Launhardt (1832-1918) belongs to this
group. He was Professor for roads, raylways and bridges and then Rektor at
the Hanover Polytechnical Academy. He was well known in Germany as an
expert of transportation networks, whose issues he treated from both the
economic and the engineering viewpoints.
