Before overdoing the America-bashing on this 
issue of mathematization, I would note that Debreu 
is a Frenchman and that the most extreme version 
of formalist mathematization has reflected the 
French Bourbakist tradition, which Debreu was 
a direct product of.  Roy Weintraub's recent book 
lays all this out very clearly.
