There are two threads here.  One set of messages indicates that 
mathematical techniques moved from engineers to economists.  Another 
(Veblen, eg.) suggests that some economists adopted an engineering 
perspective. 
 
The Koopmans lecture that I mentioned insisted that the engineering 
perspective is very different from that of economics.
