I didn't follow the whole discussion on economics and engineering but the
swiss-german economist Walter G. Waffenschmidt (1887-1980) may be
interesting in this concern: He planed to build a machine, a model of
economic circular flow already in 1957. He tried to found a new discipline
called "Wirtschaftsmechanik" (also the title of his 1957-book).

He was an engineer as well as an economist and influenced by Wiener's
cybernetics.
