Subject: National Not-for-Profit Chartered Bank - We need your help!

Dear Colleague,

As you might be aware, an initiative has been under development for
many months now to develop a national not for profit chartered bank
focused on meeting the unique needs of our sector. Many such not for
profit focused banks exist in other parts of the world, and
significant study has been made of them to allow us to build a
made-in-Canada version. The bank will be an institution that, while
having a social mission, would be a chartered bank, subject to all the
oversight of the regulators, and operated and managed in the expected
prudential manner.

The bank is being developed to meet some of the key financial needs of
organizations including: access to lines of credit, and access to
insurance. As you know access to loans and lines of credit are
essential when, for example, organizations are building or renovating
their facilities, or when a donation is late in arriving. I believe
that the services that the bank plans to offer will make it easier for
all of us to achieve our missions.

The initiative has emerged with the participation and support of many
organizations and individuals within the sector, including COVO. It
has also developed strong support from the private sector, and, most
recently, you might have seen mention of the initiative in the 2004
Federal Budget where the government described it as an innovative
initiative that deserved further exploration and support. The project
is being led by a strong team, with a board of directors chaired by
Tim Brodhead, President & CEO of the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation,
and includes, for example, Judy Maxwell, President of CPRN, Lynne
Toupin, Director of the Human Resources in the Voluntary Sector Study,
and Joanne Linzey, CEO of the United Way of Halifax.

To ensure that the bank is responsive to organization needs when it
opens its doors, we would like to request your support by responding
to the attached online questionnaire. The questionnaire will take
roughly 15 minutes of time from the person in your organization who is
most familiar with your finances. Any information you provide will be
held in the strictest confidence. If you encounter any technical
difficulties with the survey itself please contact Sofi Khwaja at
either of 416 703 7315 or [log in to unmask]

Your support is very important and very much appreciated. It will go a
long way to ensuring that this initiative will best fit our sector's
needs.

On behalf of the team working on this initiative, we would like to
thank you for your participation.

Best regards,

Joan Christensen
