Dear Milind Khadilkar:

If you haven’t done so already, do check for materials at the Inter
University Centre for International Studies on the Osmania University
campus at Hyderabad. Formerly the American Studies Research Centre (ASRC),
it had a rich collection of Twain resources when I had the pleasure of
being its director (1970-71). These, both text and visual materials, were
further augmented later. For instance, the vertical file in the library’s
special collections contained all the material collected for a SPAN article
about Twain in India, including both copies of newspaper clippings and
contemporary images, as well as drawings produced for that issue of the
magazine.

As you know, Twain also visited Lahore and Rawalpindi (since 1947 within
Pakistan). It happens that a few years ago students at Lahore’s National
College of Arts were challenged to paint modern Mughal miniatures depicting
historic American scenes as they might have looked if enacted in
Pakistan—i.e. such as “Washington Crossing (not the Delaware but) the
Ravi.” One of these, painted by Rabia Kanwal, depicts Mark Twain in Mughal
dress standing in front of the Shish Mahal in the Lahore Fort. A copy of it
can be inspected on the Forum’s web site
<http://www.yorku.ca/twainweb/gifs/lahore1.html>, where is seems to have
suffered somewhat from electronic wear and tear. If it interests you, I can
send you a pristine copy as an e-mail attachment.

Regards,

Charles Boewe
