1. 2004 SUMMERACTIVE HOT TOPICS

Hot Topic No. 3: "Alberta Parks--Great Places to Get Out and Play!"

This week's Hot Topic, "Alberta Parks--Great Places to Get Out and Play!,"
was produced by Alberta Community Development to promote SummerActive's
healthy living message. This is the last of the Hot Topics distributed by
the Alberta Centre for Active Living during the campaign.

SummerActive (www.summeractive.canoe.ca) is a national six-week campaign
(May 10-June 19, 2004) that promotes physical activity and helps develop
healthy lifestyles. The SummerActive campaign in Alberta is sponsored by
Alberta Community Development and the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and
Wildlife Foundation in partnership with Health Canada and other
organizations.

a) SummerActive Challenge Day Results

Congratulation Alberta! So far 12,000 people have registered on the
SummerActive web site--indicating that they participated in the Alberta
Active Challenge Day on May 28, 2004.  Did you register your participation?
If not, please do so--it's easy!  Simply visit www.summeractive.canoe.ca,
click on "Participants Register Your Activity," and fill in your
information.  Make sure that you register under "Alberta Active Living
Challenge Day--All of Alberta (May 28)."

SummerActive is Canada's annual physical activity campaign encouraging
individuals to develop healthy lifestyles.  This Year campaign run's May
10-June 19.

b) Healthy Alberta web site

The centre continues to contribute active living resources to this
Government of Alberta health-promotion web site. Heidi Bates, a registered
dietitian, provides the healthy eating information.

Check out What's New for June on the site at www.healthyalberta.com. While
you're there, let us know how we're doing by filling in the surveys (look
under the Active Living and Healthy Eating Common Questions sections).

c) Three new Frequently Asked Questions on the Canadian Health Network –
Active Living web site:

- How can my family make its leisure time more active?

- What are some important things to consider in regards to resistance/weight
training for youth ages 12 to 17?

- When is the best time to stretch?

then FAQs.
