Subject: [SDOH] Public Health Priorities in Ontario, Canada

On the same day that Campaign 2000 announced its latest
report on child poverty in Canada, the Ontario Medical
Officer of Health provided her annual report on health. Read on...

1. Report Card on Child Poverty in Ontario - Canada's largest province
http://www.campaign2000.ca/rc/pdf/04ONreportcard.pdf

In 1989 Canada’s Parliament unanimously resolved to eliminate
child poverty by the year 2000. At that time 11.4% of Ontario's
children lived in poverty...

Despite many years of economic growth and prosperity,
however, the child poverty rate of 13.6% for 2002 is much higher
than the rate in 1989.

In 2002, a six year decline in the rate of child poverty ended.
There are now 373,000 children living in poverty in Ontario -
97,000 more than in 1989 - an increase of 35%... SNIP

One in two Ontarians overweight: report
Canadian Press, November 24, 2004

TORONTO -- Almost half of Ontario's adults are overweight and measures need
to be taken to reduce what has become an obesity "epidemic," the province's
chief medical officer said Wednesday.

"I am alarmed to report that almost one out of every two adults in Ontario
is
overweight or obese," Dr. Sheila Basrur said in her annual report, titled
Healthy Weights, Healthy Lives.

The report also warns that obesity among children aged seven to 13 tripled
between 1981 and 1996... SNIP

The reports also asks the government to give Ontarians better access to
weight-loss information by providing a telephone service such as the
Dial-a-Dietician
service in British Columbia that has been in operation for 30 years... SNIP

3. My comments.
1. I guess it doesn't matter if you are poor, materially deprived, excluded
or
just blame miserable, as long as you aren't fat.

I need not mind subscribers that a) all medical officer of health have
thorough
training in the social determinants of health as part of their medical
residency;
b) Dr. Basrur has sat through my standard presentation on the social
determinants
of health; and c) "It doesn't take a weatherman to know which way the wind
blows."

Please add your own!
