For those keeping track of Twain media stuff, the following book has an
interesting page on the portrayal of Twain in the "Bonanza" episode:
Buxton, David. From The Avengers to Miami Vice: Form and Ideology in
Television Series. Manchester: Manchester UP. 1990.
In Buxton's paragraph long analysis, the fictional Twain is discussed as a
rugged individualist who is superior to smug, conceited corrupted town
leaders due to his sophistication from traveling all around America. He has
tried many trades, so has wisdom to pass on to the town citizens. His
principles come from experience, the quintessential populist hero. I
apologize for getting these notes on my tape recorder without getting the
page number.
