     A curious aspect of the history of accounting 
is that it played a major role in the replacement 
of Roman numerals by Arabic numerals (easier 
to do the calculations) and also in the acceptance 
of negative numbers and the zero.  Theologians 
disliked the idea of negative numbers, but the 
idea of negative net worth was powerful indeed.
