Well, look on the bright side.  Technicians and engineers can produce a sophisticated
version of the post hoc, ergo propter hoc "fallacy", call it the post hoc, ergo propter
hoc "principle", and win the Nobel Prize.
 
With luck, next year it might go to an ingenious sophistication of the "principle" of
composition.  I won't mention any candidates for fear of giving offense.
