To the idea that it's a waste of time to read the old authors, because =  
we know so much more than they did, T.S. Eliot responded by saying, =  
"Yes. And they are what we know."   
  
If I recollect aright, that's in his book "Notes Towards the Definition =  
of Culture(1948)".
