I would be very careful of accepting any statement by Gary Wills that connects any phrase
in The Declaration of Independence with Chastellux.
 
Shortly after INVENTING AMERICA came out, Ron Hamowy published a review of it in THE
WILLIAM AND MARY QUARTERLY that devastatingly critiqued Will's use of sources and
concluded that there was scant evidence of any scholarship in the entire book. I've looked
for my copy of the Hamowy review to give the reference, but can't immediately find it.
