One thing to note about Adam Smith's views on education is that he doesn't regard it as
solely an investment in human capital (properly, I think).  Education designed to correct
the stultification created by the division of labor can not meaningfully be regarded as
such, since instead of increasing the individual's productivity, and thus future pay, its
rationale is, arguably, to create conditions for autonomous choice (and civic engagement)
on his or her part.
