I was reminded of this anecdote, although it strays from the subject
somewhat. Several years back a prominent university hired a leave
replacement for a macroeconomist. The replacement turned out to be a
specialist in the economics of fisheries, of all things. Some wag suggested
that it was a simple misunderstanding: the replacement obviously thought
the school had been advertising for a mackerel economist.
