Does anyone know the first usage of the word "recession" to describe a downward trend in
the business cycle? Other sources have narrowed the time frame to pre 1910, but I've been
unable to pin down an exact date or source for the first usage.

[I'm inquiring on behalf of Kevin Hassett, Director of Economic Policy Studies, American
Enterprise Institute.]

Thank you,
