The American scholar Alice Thorner passed away on Wednesday morning in Paris at the age of
87.
She will be mourned and remembered in India and elsewhere.
Along with Daniel Thorner, she wrote the classic "Land And Labour In India" published by
Asia Publishing House, Bombay in 1962.
The book contains some fascinating essays including one on "Employer-Labourer
Relationships in Agriculture." The essays bring together a range of economic,
sociological and legal insights.
Alice was associated for a long time with the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, Sciences
Economiques et Sociales.
Daniel Thorner predeceased her. Alice was a regular visitor to India where the Thorners
had several friends and admirers.
