Though it is not immediately relevant to Smith, the Union also was   
linked with the future market (and quality) of Scotch.  And indeed   
the mash from producing the liquor helped feed the cattle over the   
winter.  To see the wonderful set of interconnections, and the role   
that taxation of Scotch had (it resulted in it being aged, in the   
bonded warehouses--which much improved its quality), go to Peter   
Caldwell's doctoral dissertation, or the summary thereof in the
