Within philosophy this practice does take place, and is talked about by
folks who do it -- usually in the case of downplaying unfavored persons.
Rather famously, it has also been charged in the former case in a recent
blow up at meetings of the American Philosophical Association. It seems
from reports of this ongoing controversy that most philosophers find
discussions of these facts more distasteful and unethical than they do the
practices themselves.
