I wonder if someone on this list could help straighten a confusing point of
chronology for me. I'm interested in Twain's work with the Broadway producer
Augustin Daly, who had produced both the musical of _Roughing It_ and Twain
& Harte's _Ah Sin_. The reference book _Mark Twain A to Z_ provides the
following additional information:
"In the mid-1880s, Mark Twain had trouble gaining admittance into Daly's
theater for an appointment--an incident that he later made the subject of a
speech he delivered at Daly's Theater in 1877."
According full respect to R. Kent Rasmussen's excellent work, this
chronology is nevertheless unclear to me. Can someone tell me when this
speech was in fact given (I find no mention of it in the several bios on my
bookshelf)? Also, and more to my needs, has it been published anywhere, in
any form other than Twain's account of the 'lockout' given in _Following the
Equator_?
Thanks. - Nic
p.s. for anyone who's interested, UVirginia's on-line e-text archive has
available a scanned image repro of the handwritten note Twain sent to Daly
in 1884 asking if he was interested in producing MT's adaptation of _Tom
Sawyer_.
