Another excellent historical study is David Hackett Fischer's Albion's Seed: Four British Folkways in America, particularly section four, "Borderlands to the Backcountry: The Flight from North Britain, 1717-1775.

I forgot to mention that James Webb=E2=80=99s BORN FIGHTING provides a = pretty good historical context for suth=E2=80=99run white culture, and = I=E2=80=99ve been told ALL OVER BUT THE SHOUTIN (Bragg) is a good = pairing with the J D Vance book. I=E2=80=99ve read the former, but not = the latter.
