Coley Taylor, in _Mark Twain’s Margins on Thackeray’s “Swift”_ (1935)
recounts a conversation with Twain about _Joan of Arc_. However, in the
1935 memoir Taylor, who says he was ten years old at the time, cannot
recall exactly where the talk took place. He does recall the town of
Redding elders being deeply shocked to find out Twain “did not believe in
heaven or hell” (p. 15).
