====================== HES POSTING ====================
Though I'm not at all sure it's the best book on this subject, and though I
have an interest (that is, an essay of my own) in it, I'd suggest William
J. Barber, ed., Economists and Higher Learning in the Nineteenth Century,
Transaction Publishers (1993). It's a series of essays about how the
discipline of economics became "institutionalized" in various American
colleges and universities before 1900, and naturally encompasses a great
deal of the history of American economic thought in this period.
Hope this helps.
