If your student is interested in casting the net a bit more broadly, she 
can check out Leonard Lessius, who wrote at the end of the scholastic era. 
A nice survey of Lessius's ideas can be found in Barry Gordon's book, 
ECONOMIC ANALYSIS BEFORE ADAM SMITH.  Gordon touches on Lessius's 
discussion of the topic in question.
