Salary Range:     Level A: $46 324 to $56 421 pa (full-time salary)
      Level B: $59 393 to $70 527 pa (full-time salary)
Superannuation:   Employer contribution of 9% of salary
Employment Type:  Fixed-term, full-time (up to 3 years with the possibility
of extension subject to funding and need)

KEY PURPOSE
This position will make a key contribution to the Australian Health
Inequities Program (AHIP) which is an NHMRC Capacity Building grant across
Flinders University and the University of Melbourne.  The appointee will be
engaged in research on the contribution made to health inequities by the
labour market, housing and social capital.  There is scope for the
appointee to pursue his or her own research agenda within the broader AHIP
agenda and to build their research capacity.


ORGANISATIONAL ENVIRONMENT
The Department of Public Health is part of the School of Medicine of the
Faculty of Health Sciences at Flinders University. We aim to promote health
and healthy environments in Australia and overseas by advocating for and
advancing multi-disciplinary public health research, teaching and practice.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
· Undertake research on theory, methodology, policy and practice in
relation to health inequities
· Contribute to the project management of research initiatives.
· Participate in applications for major research grants
· Contribute to the development of methodological and analytical techniques
for conducting longitudinal studies
· Write research papers for publication and present conference papers at
annual retreats and National and International conferences
· Provide co-supervision and (where eligible) principal supervision for
higher degree research (PhD, DrPH, Honours) students engaged in research
relevant to the AHIP
· Contribute to teaching and training at national short courses
· Identify, with support from Lead Investigator through annual performance
appraisal, staff development needs for the following year and national and
international opportunities for training and development
· Contribute to the planning and reporting on AHIP
· Liaise with national and international colleagues.
· Promote and provide a safe working environment for students, staff and
visitors with attention to the requirements of the Occupational Health
Safety and Welfare Act, the Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Act and

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
The position reports to the Head of the Department of Public Health,
Professor Fran Baum.  Supervision of students or staff may be required.
The incumbent will also establish and maintain working relationships with
community representatives and community-based health service providers and
the SA Department of Health.


SELECTION CRITERIA
(Note for intending applicants - applicants should address each selection
criterion individually and should argue their case by citing evidence to
support their claims rather than presenting a list of facts only).

Essential criteria
1. PhD in social science or health related discipline.
2. Experience in one or more of the following areas of social or health
research: qualitative, survey or policy research.
3. Proven ability to work in a multidisciplinary team and with a range of
professional workers and individuals in the community.
4. Demonstrated ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines.
5. Extensive experience working with a variety of computer software
packages, including word processing, spread sheets and data analysis.

Desirable criteria
1. Communicate effectively in written and spoken English.
2. Demonstrated familiarity and understanding of the social capital,
location and health and/or social determinants of health literature.

Appointment at Level B

Appointment at Level B will be contingent on the following essential
criteria also being met.
1. Experience in managing and conducting research projects relevant to the
social determinants of health.
2. Research publications on the social determinants of health.
