Ripley and Dana's "carelessness" is pardonable as they wrote before "factors
of production" came to be treated as a strict concept. It would be
interesting to check Ripley's Cyclopedia of 1862 which unfortunately is not
available online. (The American Cyclopaedia of 1873-76 is.)

Ripley's "articles and reviews were widely syndicated. He was an arbiter of
taste and culture for much of the reading public" ("George Ripley" in
Encyclopaedia Britannica).
