The reference may be to "A Plea for Cannibalism."  This was a weekly 
declamation exercise presented by Veblen at Carleton College referred to 
in J. Dorfman, Economic Mind in America, p. 31. 
 
There is a mention of the use of butter and unguent on the flesh in 
Africa as a form of conspicuous consumption in "The Economic Theory of 
Women's Dress." reprinted in Essays in our Changing Order, L. Ardroozi 
p.69
