Thank you Anthony,  This was what I was asking about -- how much this divide in   
Scotland was driving his thinking & how much his book was intended to "civilize" the
Highlanders.  I recall reading once the Smith went to great lengths to rid himself of his
Scottish accent.  I can't recall the source.
