Like most things, "The" Inquisition was more complex, the more one knows
about it.  As I recall there were two Inquisitions, a Spanish and a Papal
one, perhaps overlapping. The Dominicans and later the Franciscans
administered the Papal Inquisition. Not sure where or if the Jesuits were
involved. Am subject to correction by those closer to this episode.
